Quale

The Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell, turned the Republican Commonwealth into Europe’s new model government. As the continental monarchs looked on in envy, England became a rich, well-fed society. Charles II, exiled in The Hague, died at the hand of a cuckolded husband and there the royal line of Stuart ended. England closed in on itself, banning overseas trade and expelling foreigners. Coastal cities became forts bristling with seaward guns.

Gradually the State became an apparatus of terror, forcing the countrydwellers to work ever harder to fill the stomachs of the hungry cities. In 1799, 150 years after the first ever meeting of the English Council of State in 1649, the story begins.
